This nifty utility uses the Microsoft speech engine to transform text into MP3, WAV, or OGG audio files. The majority of users will have no problem figuring out the clear and direct interface, most of which comprises a large box for entering text. You can easily change the reading speed, the volume, and the bit rate, and you can choose from one female and two male voices. We like that the program can read 10 languages, making it helpful to a wide range of people. You also can add a human element to the reading by adding pauses for lengths you determine, though we're not sure how often people might go to the trouble. You'll also find a basic text editor comparable to the one offered by Microsoft Word and an integrated Web browser. Though very simple, this program will be useful to children learning to read and to the visually impaired.

In the end, the one I purchased was a little thing called Yeosoft Text to MP3 Speaker. This supports MP3, MP4, WMA, OGG, wav and a few other formats. It has fewer bells and whistles than some of the others, but it does write straight to the format you choose. It's layout is simple, and you have good control of the sampling and bit rate. And it loads documents very fast. It happily runs in the background doing its conversion. It's also a reasonably good text editor, although I've yet to explore this. English is clearly not the author's first language, but it's easy enough to use and the interface is simple but functional. It's also only $19, which is cheaper than many of its competitors. So I'm very happy with the Yeosoft Text Speaker, and highly recommend it.
